Today, the best selling handguns in the US are pocket pistols, carried in the pocket for self defense. Things haven’t changed – in the wildest days of the American West, the most popular handgun was also the pocket pistol.

Skill Set: Why I Don't Like the Forty
by Tiger McKee

This pair of Glocks are 9mm and the .40 caliber versions are the same size. The more abrupt cartridge, the .40 Auto, is harder on the machinery and the shooter. Is it enough more effective than the 9x19mm to justify going to the .40? Rich Grassi Photo
I do not like the .40 caliber. I'm sure there will be plenty of people who disagree with me on this, but since it's my column I get to state my opinion. This opinion is based on two issues with .40 caliber pistols. Keep in mind that an issue is something that is common, you see it a lot, as opposed to a problem, which is normally limited to an individual or particular weapon.

The .40 was developed specifically as a law enforcement caliber by Smith & Wesson and Winchester and as a direct result of the 1986 F.B.I. Miami shootout between agents and two hard criminals, Platt and Matix. Both bad guys were killed, but two agents were killed with five others injured. Basically the F.B.I. was looking for a cartridge that had the performance of the .38 Special +P load that would work with a semi-auto pistol. The .40 is supposedly the ideal blend of bullet size and velocity.

Selection

Standard pressure 9mm loads are better in small pistols as this minimizes the recoil recovery time between shots.
In this short space, there won't be an exhaustive treatment of all unusually small 9mm pistols. I've selected two; one is very new and the other has been around a few years. The concept is considerable power in a small, but controllable, envelope.

I've searched for the right concealment pistol for many years. I was astonished at Kahr Arms when they opened way back in the 1990s. Here we had a slender, powerful pistol of compact dimensions that handled like a service size pistol. The K9 had the feel of the Browning Hi-Power and the size of a Walther PP (normally chambered in 7.65mm or 9mmK).

Fast forward to the 2004-5 time frame, which ushered in a new development by Kel-Tec, the PF-9. A lightly built compact 9mm, it was hammer-fired DAO and not a bad effort.

Since then, Beretta has a Nano, SIG-Sauer has the P290 (which is really quite a shooter) and Ruger developed their LC9. The LC9 wandered in here as the result of some gun trading skullduggery.]]>

USFA head honcho Doug Donnelly is a visionary, as well as an interestingly to hang out with, so I'm interested in seeing the final product. BTW, this goes along with what the cherubs an d seraphim are telling me that USFA is moving away a bit from their superb single action pistols toward the amazingly lucrative black rifle market.

Advantage of single point of focus, disadvantage everything else? Perhaps it's time to re-examine pistol optics for duty.

Shooters got to try the RMR on pistols by SIG and Glock.

"Now, how well do they work in adverse light environments; Indoors or when you're running a weaponlight for target ID? I have no idea. Does the reticle shine back enough to prevent target ID in that last moment? Not sure. No one said we're jumping ship today, but it's time more of us got a look. Dave Spaulding tried a mini-red dot on a pistol. I notice his current gun has metal sights.

That said, it's far easier driving the dot to the target and controlling the trigger than learning to use metal sights. It's the wave of the future - whatever problems we can identify in the simulators.

We can climb aboard now or get dragged aboard later."

from: www.personaldefensenetwork.com/articles/..._campaign=news092812

The most important issue with a defensive firearm is reliability.

The next most important factor we need to look at is shootability.

Carryability is another word that should become part of your lexicon if you are going to carry your gun for defensive use.

For a “new in box” defensive handgun that meets the requirements I’ve set, you should not be spending more than $600. In fact, $500 is a very fair price for a new or almost new defensive gun. There is no reason to consider spending more. Keep in mind that you will need to purchase spare magazines, a good holster (or two), both defensive and practice ammunition, and possibly invest in professional training to go along with your purchase. You should still be able to purchase everything you need for under $1,000:

Defensive Firearm: $500 - $600
Holster: $50 - $75
Spare Magazines: $50
Defensive Ammo: $75 - $100 (reliability testing and two to three magazines for carry)
Practice Ammo: $100 (minimum!)
Training: Varies (books and DVDs, CCW permit, defensive training)

My company currently recommends the following firearms, in 9mm, as the first places to look when choosing a defensive handgun. In alphabetical order, they are:

Caracal -- C & F models without the “quick sight” option.

Glock Models 26, 19 or 17. If you choose a 4th Gen, ensure you have the currently recommended springs. This specific model was plagued with problems when first released.

Smith & Wesson M&P -- models without a manual safety or magazine disconnect.

Springfield XD. This model is suggested with one caveat: the grip safety presents a failure point that is most significant when clearing complex malfunctions or shooting in unorthodox positions. But it is recommended particularly because of its better fit for many shooters with small hands.

All of the above MSFs have been observed to be reliable under a variety of circumstances with a variety of shooters.

Handguns that get Honorable Mentions as defensive choices:

Snub Nosed Double Action Revolvers, such as the S&W 642, for the reasons spelled out above.

Walther PPS. This slim MSF is currently going through an extended reliability test and has performed very well to date.

Ruger LCP. This reliable gun is an extreme compromise to carryability, is chambered in the less-than-optimal .380 ACP round, and has relatively low shootability. But it has proven reliable and is extremely convenient to carry because of its small size.]]>

Bought the CM9, it shoots a little low with 115 and placing the front dot on top of the back sights. HOWEVER, using my preferred 124s and letting the front sight float above the back, it shoots dead on.

Weight difference is 2 oz with 2 extra rounds, is slim and fits easier in the pocket and draws without a snag.

A fully-cocked striker design, provides a consistant, crisp, and short trigger pull every time. Essentially, the Walther PPQ is the first "single action" striker-fired pistol on the market. Despite a relatively loose fit between the slide and frame, the gun delivers on the accuracy potential of its trigger.

I have put more lead downrange than I care to admit, and it functions as well today as it did on day one. Extra magazines are now also finally available on the market.

Bravo Walther!
