Standard M1A Semi-Automatic Rifle, Black Fiberglass Stock

During my time of service in the USN, the M14 was the standard issue service rifle. The M14 was what we trained on for rifle marksmanship. The M14 was what was in the ship's armory and was issued to the roving patrols when in foreign ports where there was an elevated threat risk of protesters/boarders.

Even though I already had an AR-15, the M1A was always on my mind as the rifle that I really wanted. It's the rifle platform that I've worked with the most so I'm most familiar with it. When I got the opportunity to pick one up at a pretty good deal, I jumped on it. This rifle is a thing of beauty and amazing power. My first few rounds were about three inches low at 50 yards. Dialing in the elevation adjustment put the rounds right in the center of the target just as easy as you please.

If you ever get the chance to own one of these, you should go ahead and buy it. This is a serious rifle that will get the job done whether you're hunting whitetail or hunkering down in a total SHTF scenario.

Firearms Reviews

Pro's
Powerful cartridge
Ammunition is readily available
Accurate enough to be used (even today) as a dedicated marksman or sniper rifle in the U.S. military
Long history of use (since 1959)
Plenty of options for customization from Springfield Armory or 3rd party manufacturers
Con's
Genuine Springfield Armory magazines are relatively expensive; Korean-made magazines under DOD contract (NSN numbered) are *almost* identical and appear to work just as well.
Heavy and long, compared to the M4A1/AR-15 carbine platform
The 7.62x51mm ammunition is considerably heavier than the 5.56x45mm ammunition of the M4A1/AR-15 carbine platform
Is not immediately adaptable to scope mounting; may require some degree of minor to moderate smithing
