The Quest for an FFL

I have found a very nice deal online on AR-15 lower receivers, and have decided to get 2. the problem is that I do not know any local FFLs who handle transfers from online purchases.   Yes I go to some big box sporting goods stores, but one charges $75 and the other charges $96 per transfer! Since the lowers are $50, the transfer fees kill the deal.   So I have started shopping outside of my area,  as far as an hour and a half away.   So far it is more of the same.  $45, $65, $35, then I find one. 1hr 25 min away, for $20.   Nice.  Or not. that still puts me at $77 for the lower, shipping, and transfer, with many gun shows having them for $99 (sometimes less) and giving me the option to inspect them and make sure they are up to standard is the deal really worth it?

I am still holding out on 3 places I have emailed for information, but I'm not too hopeful.  I have even considered going on to the FFL register and calling up local people who have private FFLs to see if they are willing to do some transfers since I would have to have to travel so far to get a good deal.  Though I have an in with a store about 5 hours away who is willing to do transfers at cost so long as I bring them my business, but to think that there are no small gun shops local who want to build a relationship with their customers is a bit confusing to me, I spend a lot of money on guns and ammo, granted it may not be as much as some people, but it is not such a small amount that a business would want to turn me away.

The problem with power

Or lack there of.

We have been without electricity  since Saturday night.  As it stands we are about last on the list of the power company's priorities in restoring service.  However there are a few things we have learned about ourselves with this loss of basic service.

1.  We are slaves to our habits and the loss of one comfort seems to bring our lives to a halt.  our routine has been completely destroyed, we have still sleep at home, but we have all of our food at my in-laws house, so we go there for meals, we go to my parents house for showers and laundry, and we spend any other time bouncing anywhere we can for basic entertainment.

Hello, my name is Dan and I'm new to GunFolks. I'm a diehard 2nd Amendment fan and 20 year gun enthusiast. I love reading new product reviews and keeping up to date on any new developments in the firearms world. Feel free to message me about anything, I enjoy conversation with like minded people. I get to the range monthly, and I never leave home without my .40. I'm not a big fan of open carry, except in rural areas. The element of surprise is an armed citizen's best defense, in my opinion. I look forward to chatting. Carry on.

Finding Treasures (CRKT)

On a mountain bike ride through my home town, I happened to come across a great pocket blade. It was a little rusty before I cleaned it up, who knows how long it was laying in the gutter before I found it?
Since that day, it has been like a treasure to me, and I have applied light coats of oil, and brought it back to life, with minimal nicks and scratches, it is still my favorite work and play blade.
It is sharp, strong, and reliable. It has a small locking mechanism (LAWKS) that turns the knife into a fixed blade knife.

I am really lucky to find this wonderful knife, it is currently no longer in production. :) Finder's keepers!

I have mentioned several times that I follow used gun listings in my area.  I also frequent stores that buy/sell/trade firearms.  Most of my deals are acquired by knowing more about the firearm than the seller, right place right time deals, and just going into a store without any plan on what I'm looking for.  I have plenty of reasons for focusing my purchases only on used guns. Price is only one part, buying a firearm that is already broke in is another.  Many of the lessons I have learned may appear common sense, but none the less, you must remember them since missing a small detail may be the difference between a deal and a money pit. Here are a few tips, hints and tricks I've learned in my years of shopping.

1. Guns don't lie.  Unlike when buying a used car, guns show their scars.  you quickly learn the difference between holster wear and a gun that has seen more than its fair share of beatings.

blog? i don't blog - i shoot.

the profile page looked empty and it kept bothering me that it said i hadn't created a blog.  i don't have anything important to say, and if i did say something it would probably just piss people off.

so, i don't blog.  i shoot.  i shoot often.  i don't shoot in competitions.  that (competitions against other people) isn't my thing.  i only play "with" other people because it's social but i don't ever feel like i'm competing "against" them.

i like any kind of game where you have to hit a target and accuracy counts.  it doesnt' matter if its pistols or rifles or pellet guns or archery or pool or bowling or lawndarts or whatev.  i just like to see if i can train my eyes and my body to make it a repeatable event and then finetune it to improve that accuracy.

I don't know if you have  this same thing happening to you. I have a friend who makes more than enough money to buy brand new high end rifles, guns, shotguns, and  machine guns. We go shooting about once a month at a local indoor range. Almost every time we go shoot he has a new gun. Great, it's just that he seams to get the greatest deals in the world on guns that are over a grand for less than a grand...ahhh!!! I'm all for getting a good deal, but it's  ridiculous how many he gets'. Where gonna go shot tomorrow with his newly acquired  FNH/P .45acp 15+1 that he got for $625 DOLLARS...What!!! That guns'  msrp is 1200...sick!!! More power to him, but it's starting to bug me...just a little! It almost feels like he just wants to brag about his great deals. I know it's just me being a little jealous, but the fact that he makes considerable money and gets these outrageous deals are little sicking sometimes. I wish i got deals that great! The only saving grace i have with him is that me and my 15 year old can out shoot him any day of the week!!! Which erks him just a bit! Ha! So I'll continue to shoot with him just to try out all the new toys he brings and to wipe that little smirk when my 15yr old out guns him!!!

A losing battle

I work in a large office.  There are 400 people just on this floor. Out of this populated cubicle farm we have massive discussions about guns, shooting, hunting, and archery. There are only a few people I can think of who don’t at least own a gun.  However, there is one individual we all dread.  For now I will call her “PETA”. She is about as anti-gun as you can get.  She blames hunters for “ruining nature” she blames guns for EVERY kind of criminal act ever. No, really, I mean EVER!   She actually blames guns for the Holocaust.   Well, after a normal discussion about applying for this year’s antlerless tags she struck.

“how could you kill a defenseless creature and butcher it for your own entertainment?”
